PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To provide community and school-based prevention, education, outreach, and advocacy services to decrease the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Southern Southeast Alaska.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implementation and development of violence prevention, education and outreach programs and activities.

  • Work collaboratively with WISH staff to promote prevention strategies that increase protective factors and decrease risk factors that reduce violence across the lifespan.

  • Collaborate with other agencies and develop community partnerships and increase community support of violence prevention.

  • Knowledge and comfort with public speaking, must be able to present effectively to diverse groups of varying sizes.

 

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:

  • Work collaboratively with WISH staff to organize, facilitate, and manage prevention, education, and outreach programs.

  • Coordinate and implement Girls on the Run and Let Me Run programs at elementary and middle schools in the WISH service area.  Participate in coach training and management of program during season.

  • Promote, support, and coordinate the "Lead On" Program in Ketchikan schools and provide leadership skills and opportunities for youth. Provide ongoing facilitation of youth working on Lead On projects.

  • Provide educational presentations on second step, personal safety, sexual assault, dating violence, child abuse and neglect, sexual harassment, and other related topics to students, teachers, organizations, and community members.

  • Coordinate and implement outreach on topics of personal safety, teen dating violence, child sexual abuse prevention, and other related topics within the school.

  • Work collaboratively with other organizations to support peer support and education programs.

  • Provide information, outreach, and training to educate the public in domestic violence, sexual assault, personal safety, alternatives to violence, and other related topics in partnership with other WISH staff.

  • Assist with development and implementation of support groups and activities for children and teens in shelter and/or community in partnership with other WISH staff.

  • Assist WISH in organizing activities and materials for domestic violence awareness month, child abuse prevention month, teen dating violence awareness month, women's history month, sexual assault awareness month, and other community events.

  • Participate in community task forces, coalitions, and workgroups as assigned.

  • Assist with strategic communication plans utilizing several types of media including Facebook to inform the community about dynamics of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, teen dating violence, adverse childhood experiences, child sexual/physical abuse, and related topics.

  • Seek ongoing opportunities and participate in training to enhance skills related to position.

  • Maintain ongoing communication via email, phone, and in-person meetings with prevention team members and community partners. Answer business calls, emails, and texts in a timely manner.

  • Expand and maintain relationships with youth-serving organizations related to various prevention programs.

  • Perform all record keeping activities as required and produce quarterly reports necessary for grant reports and provide data as needed for Executive Director and their designee.

  • Attend and contribute to all required staff meetings and actively participate in the training of new staff and volunteers.

  • Work effectively as a member of a team and support WISH's mission.

  • Mandated reporter of elder and child abuse.

  • Abide by WISH Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Policy

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge and experience with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

  • Knowledge regarding the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of primary prevention and the key prevention strategies being implemented in Alaska.

  • Prefer at least two years of progressively responsible intimate partner violence prevention work or community development and a knowledge of youth development.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of adverse childhood experiences and trauma-informed care.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with paid and volunteer staff and people of varied backgrounds and value systems.

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Prefer bachelor’s degree in social work, education, psychology, or a related field.

 

REQUIRED FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successfully complete a fingerprint, background, and criminal history check

  • Must adhere to all WISH policies, procedures and protocols including confidentiality and code of ethics.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

 

 RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER PEOPLE:

  • Cooperates and interacts with WISH staff, volunteers and community agencies with dignity and tact.

  • Will not engage in intimate relationships with a person seeking or receiving services from WISH.

  • Model nonviolent behavior and freedom from substance abuse.

 

CONFIDENTIALITY:

  • Must adhere to all confidentiality requirements including, but not limited to WISH’s internal policies, requirements of local, state and federal law necessary to protect the safety, dignity and privacy of persons seeking or receiving services.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Fast paced office environment with moderate to loud noise and frequent, unscheduled interruptions.

  • Periodic exposure to situations where individuals may be a danger to themselves or others.

  • Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions (cigarette smoke, bodily fluids, spills, chemicals, cleaning agents, broken glass, etc.)

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to walk, sit, climb stairs, stoop, and reach high places.

  • Ability to use hands and wrists, fingers, and grasping.

  • Frequently uses speech, hearing, and sight abilities in exchanging information with clients, agency staff, employers, and representatives of community organizations.

  • Occasionally lifts/carries up to 50 pounds in performing various duties.
