Job Title: Executive Director

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of Women In Safe Homes according to the mission, values and strategic direction as established by the Board of Directors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Leadership
• Participate with the Board of Directors in developing and implementing a vision and strategic plan to guide WISH
• Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues, and emerging and promising practices that affect WISH
• Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Director on all aspects of WISH's activities
• Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director and between the
Executive Director and staff
• In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for WISH
• Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the Board
when appropriate
• Represent WISH at community activities to enhance WISH's community profile
Operational Planning and Management
• Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the
strategic direction of WISH
• Ensure that the operation of WISH meets the needs of its participants, Board and funders
• Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of WISH
• Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement WISH policies;
review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
• Ensure that personnel, participant, donor and volunteer files are securely stored, and confidentiality is maintained in accordance with WISH policies and procedures and all applicable state and federal laws and regulations
• Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials.
Program Planning and Management
• Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of WISH's programs and services
• Ensure that the programs and services offered by WISH contribute to WISH's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board, and align with funder requirements
Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of WISH to maintain or improve quality
Human Resources Management
• Determine staffing and volunteer requirements for organizational management and program
delivery
• Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff and volunteers
• Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with the core competencies of trauma-informed care, and with all applicable legislation and regulations
• Recruit, interview and select staff and volunteers that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further WISH's mission
• Ensure that all staff and volunteers receives an orientation to WISH and that are required and
appropriate, position-specific training is provided
• Implement a performance management process for all staff and volunteers which includes
monitoring the performance of staff and volunteers on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review
• Coach and mentor staff and volunteers as appropriate to improve performance
• Administer progressive discipline as needed, using appropriate and legally defensible procedures
Financial Planning and Management
• Work with staff and the Board to prepare a comprehensive budget
• Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for WISH operations
• Research funding sources, and oversee the development of fund raising plans and funding proposals to increase WISH's funding base
• Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate
• Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board
• Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed
• Administer the funds of WISH according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of WISH
• Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of WISH
• Ensure that WISH complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments
• Reinstitute and implement a capital campaign for a new shelter in conjunction with the Board and Forakers
Community Relations/Advocacy
• Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of WISH and to identify
changes in the community served by WISH
• Establish good working relationships and constructive and collaborative working relationships with community groups, funders, policymakers, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of WISH
• Convene community partnership committees and task forces as needed to achieve unduplicated services
• Represent WISH at the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Risk Management
• Identify and evaluate the risks to WISH's people (participants, staff, management, volunteers),
property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks
• Ensure that the Board of Directors and WISH carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage
• Ensure that the Board and staff understand the terms, conditions and limitations of the insurance coverage
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in social sciences or related field is required
Experience
• Five years minimum experience in nonprofit social services or related field, including supervisory experience
• Preferred experience will include overseeing a domestic violence/sexual assault organization, and overseeing a shelter program
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Evidence of a commitment to trauma-informed care core competencies, and how they are
incorporated into domestic violence and sexual assault organizations
• Knowledge of historical trauma and how it impacts people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse
• Ability to maintain standards for performance including aligning policies and process with practice
• Ability to conduct effective program outcome evaluation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to develop collaborative community engagement
• Understanding of cultural diversity
• Knowledge of human resources, financial and project management
• Planning and organizational skills
• Demonstrated team-builder
